Shamali

about

A coded message for loved ones who have been taken and imprisoned, this Palestinian folk song is written with extra “L” sounds to confuse unwelcome eavesdroppers. The title Shamali refers to the northern wind: a cool evening breeze on a long summer night, a peaceful gathering with your family, and a promise to be reunited again. A Norwegian herding call completes this set, traditionally used to rally animals and send messages to other farmers. On a mountain farm, this song would be sung in a very high register to carry the tune for several kilometres, but here it is sung in a lower register to highlight the lyrics.
